as i was walking from point b to point c (point a having been arrived at and passed a while back) i was on the pavement.

not yellow, not brick. but it was a road.

and for some reason i was on the road, as opposed to on the sidewalk two feet from me.

people were walking around, going to their personal prospective points, and some were in the road as i was. some were on the sidewalk.

there was a car here and there. parked and moving.

and i walked looking down.

i looked down.

and i stopped.

there, on the pavement, was a butterfly.

the butterfly was on its side.

i took a few more steps, kneeled, and stuck one finger out.

hoped it would fly away when i nudged it.

it didnt.

so i sat there a moment, squatted as i was.

picked the butterfly up.

carried it to the grass on the other side of the sidewalk.

squatted again, placed it there.

at least it wouldnt be ran over there.

at least, there, it could pretend to be rested in a meadow.

even if the sidewalk was a step away and even if the pavement and cars and people were a few more steps away.

and i stood up and looked down and said a mental word or two.

and i walked away.
